Business Closures in Russia Tripled, Sberbank Reports Company Liquidations
In Russia, there is a mass closure of enterprises due to economic stagnation, increased taxes, and a strict monetary policy. In 2026, companies are being liquidated not only for formal reasons but also for economic ones. The number of voluntary closures and reorganizations has risen from 5,000 to 12,000-15,000 organizations per month. The largest reductions are observed in trade, construction, and manufacturing, where small and medium-sized businesses are concentrated. The opening of new companies has also sharply decreased: from January to May, only 62,000 enterprises were registered, down from 80,000 during the same period last year. In May, there were 4.3 registrations for every 1,000 active firms compared to 5.5 closures. Experts note that the increase in the tax burden, including the rise in profit tax and VAT, has prompted nearly a third of entrepreneurs to consider closing or selling their companies. Russia's GDP growth, after slowing to 1% in 2025, has approached zero. Previously, over 40% of Russian enterprises reduced personnel costs due to economic stagnation and declining revenues.
