BYD Sales Increased by 18% Due to Record Exports
Sales of the Chinese automaker BYD in August 2026 rose by 18% compared to the same period last year, reaching just over 440,000 vehicles. The export share accounted for 43% of total shipments, more than doubling the figures from previous months. For the first time, international sales contributed over 50% of the company's total revenue. BYD is actively expanding its presence in Southeast Asia, Europe, and South America to avoid fierce competition and declining consumer spending in the domestic Chinese market. August results improved compared to the first half of the year when the company upgraded its assembly lines for new batteries. However, to achieve the annual target of 5-5.5 million vehicles, sales need to accelerate. Competition with traditional automakers, such as Toyota Motor and Volkswagen, is intensifying. BYD's flagship plant in Hungary has been subjected to inspections due to potential violations of subcontractor labor rights, and the European Union is considering imposing tariffs on Chinese hybrid vehicles. In the second quarter, the company's net profit increased by 30% to 8.2 billion yuan.
