Chilean company reported unrecognized transfers: investigation into nearly S/4 million movement to personal accounts in Lima
An operation involving nearly four million soles has put a group of individuals under investigation who, according to information released by Panorama, received deposits of hundreds of thousands of soles into personal accounts to convert them into manager's checks and cryptocurrencies. The case primarily took place in Miraflores and began with a proposal presented as a legitimate financial operation. The money originated from accounts linked to a Chilean multinational company engaged in payment processing. However, no authorized representative of the company made the deposits. The company reported transactions to accounts it did not recognize and denounced the movement of its funds as theft. The investigation identified several individuals who visited various banking agencies in Miraflores on August 4. Among them were Manuel Aquize Estrada, César A. T., Luis Alberto S., and Jhon Alberto P. S. Part of the money was to be withdrawn from the banks via manager's checks to then be used for purchasing digital assets. The case began with contact between a former executive of the company, whose current whereabouts are unknown, and Manuel Aquize Estrada, a former taxi driver from Cusco who, according to the report, was engaged in cryptocurrency trading. The first meeting took place at the Café Haití de Miraflores. Since that meeting, the operation added new accounts and individuals until it exceeded four million soles. Aquize agreed to use his bank account. The first deposit occurred on July 31 for 500 thousand soles, followed by another movement of 300 thousand soles. On August 3, he received another 500 thousand soles. In total, Aquize received 1 million 300 thousand soles. The money was withdrawn via manager's checks and transferred to a currency exchange to acquire cryptocurrencies. To complete the operation, he provided information corresponding to the digital wallets indicated by the supposed recipients. According to the information provided in the report, the former executive confirmed by phone that the cryptocurrencies were arriving at the specified wallets. The operation continued under this mechanism until new money requirements arose.
The next step involved incorporating other individuals. Aquize brought three acquaintances to the meeting on August 4 who would allow the use of their bank accounts to receive new deposits. Among them were César A.T., Luis Alberto S., and Jhon Alberto P. S. Each received 500 thousand soles, according to information released by Panorama. Security cameras recorded the members of the group during their movements through the district. The images allowed for the reconstruction of part of the sequence prior to the police interventions. The company indicated that it did not recognize the individuals attempting to withdraw the money and confirmed that no authorized representative made the deposits. Following this communication, a complaint was filed regarding the irregular movement of funds. The alert allowed for part of the operation to be halted before the money was fully converted into cryptocurrencies. The implicated individuals were intercepted at various locations. Aquize was arrested in Jesús María, while the other individuals were located as part of the operation carried out in Lima.
The investigation described by Panorama indicates that part of the funds withdrawn through this mechanism reached currency exchanges and money changers located in different regions of Peru. The objective was to transform the received money into digital assets through wallets provided by the supposed recipients. The case still presents questions about the exact route taken by the transfers from the accounts of the Chilean company to the personal accounts used by those involved. The information released indicates that it is not precisely known how all the deposits were distributed among the individuals who participated in the operation. The amount involved reached nearly four million soles, according to the information provided about the complaint and the detected operations.
The investigation also points to the former executive who initially contacted Aquize Estrada. According to the report, this man used a prior relationship with the former Cusco taxi driver to incorporate him into the scheme and then requested new accounts to increase the volume of money mobilized. The former executive remains at large, according to the information released. His role is central within the described operation, as he was the one who presented the supposed need to convert funds from the Chilean company into dollars and cryptocurrencies. The multinational company, for its part, reported the operations after detecting transactions to accounts it did not identify. The police intervention on August 4 allowed for the arrest of several participants before they could complete the planned withdrawals.
