China's Tightening Monetary Policy Lowers Returns on US Stocks with High QDII Exposure
A study has been released indicating that China's tightening monetary policy may reduce the returns on US stocks with high Qualified Domestic Institutional Investor (QDII) exposure. The research team analyzed stock holdings of mutual funds participating in the QDII program to examine the impact of adjustments in overseas stock portfolios by Chinese investors on the US stock market. QDII, designed in 2006, allows Chinese institutional investors to invest in overseas assets, with assets under management reaching $165.6 billion in 2023, of which $90.6 billion is allocated to mutual funds. The researchers compared stock price movements before and after the announcement of monetary policy to analyze the transmission path of the shock from Chinese monetary policy to overseas stock markets. The results showed that the MSCI country index with high QDII exposure had significantly lower returns compared to indices with low exposure, both in US dollars and local currencies. Notably, US stocks invested in QDII funds experienced a greater decline in returns following the policy announcement, and this impact persisted for at least five days. The researchers concluded that adjustments in individual investors' portfolios are a key transmission channel, noting that individual investors respond more sensitively to monetary policy shocks than institutional investors. This study suggests that China's monetary policy can be observed through the flow of funds into overseas stocks.
