The minutes from the Federal Reserve's July meeting reveal that policymakers mentioned AI a total of 18 times across 15 paragraphs discussing economic conditions and outlook. Officials warned that large-scale investments in AI infrastructure could boost overall demand, thereby putting pressure on inflation, and that the impact of AI on the labor market remains uncertain. Some officials believe that price pressures related to AI are primarily concentrated in chips, software, and certain consumer electronics, while others pointed out that the expansion of AI investments could affect overall prices. Fed officials are concerned that AI capital expenditures are increasingly reliant on non-bank investors and debt financing from regional banks, and that a sharp reversal in AI asset pricing could lead to significant revaluation of stocks, impacting financial institutions and consumer spending. The minutes also noted that the impact of AI on the labor market may currently be limited, as data center construction creates jobs in some areas while exacerbating shortages in positions such as electricians, plumbers, and construction workers. Some officials warned that there remains uncertainty about whether and when the promised productivity gains from AI will materialize.
