Germany to Build Gas Power Plants with Capacity of Up to 11 GW for €35 Billion
The European Commission has approved a state support program for Germany amounting to up to €35 billion to strengthen energy security. As part of this initiative, the country plans to build gas power plants with a total capacity of up to 11 GW over the next five years. The implementation of the project requires approval from Brussels due to strict EU antitrust regulations. The new power plants will be activated during peak load periods and when there is insufficient electricity from renewable sources. Initially, they will operate on natural gas, but by 2045 they are expected to transition to clean hydrogen. The program also includes increasing the share of renewable energy to 80% by 2030 and a complete phase-out of coal-fired power plants by 2038. Europe is facing a gas shortage ahead of winter, and EU gas storage was only 65% full at the end of August 2026.
