Bitcoin ETF Expands Financial Sector Integration with $60.3 Billion Scale
Bitcoin (BTC) is increasingly flowing into traditional financial accounts through ETFs, trusts, and bank custody. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has allowed the creation and redemption of spot crypto asset exchange-traded products (ETPs) as of July 29, 2025. Consequently, BTC and Ethereum (ETH) ETPs can now be established and redeemed in a spot manner. Morgan Stanley Investment Management will launch the Morgan Stanley Bitcoin Trust (MSBT) on April 8, 2026, becoming the first U.S. bank-affiliated asset manager to introduce a crypto ETP. Coinbase and BNY Mellon are participating in MSBT. The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) approved Coinbase National Trust Company on April 2, 2026, and Morgan Stanley Digital Trust on June 18. In a report dated August 19, 2026, the OCC revealed that 23 out of 40 new bank charter applications received since President Trump's inauguration include digital asset activities. The BlackRock iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF (IBIT) recorded a net asset value of $60,337,556,709 as of August 24, 2026. The integration of BTC into the financial sector increases accessibility but also raises third-party dependency. The estimated amount of BTC in self-custody remains over $800 billion, indicating a growing structure of both self-custody and financial institution custody.
