Russia Attacked 52 Civilian Vessels in July, Ukraine Appeals to IMO
In July and the first half of August, Russia attacked 52 civilian vessels that were entering Ukrainian ports or were docked. The escalation of attacks poses risks to the operation of the Ukrainian maritime corridor and maritime exports. Minister Mykola Kalashnikov appealed to the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization, Arsenio Antonio Dominguez Velasco. The IMO has circulated the appeals among member states. The attacks have resulted in the deaths and injuries of sailors and damage to vessels. Among the major attacks: on July 13, the vessel AIDA was attacked in the port of Yuzhny, resulting in the deaths of three sailors; on July 14, the vessel ATLAS BEY was hit in Odesa, and the captain was killed; on July 19, GOLDEN LEO was attacked, leading to the deaths of nine crew members; on August 5, the vessel EMIL became unfit for use after an attack. Since the beginning of the war, 1,090 port infrastructure facilities and 262 commercial vessels have been damaged, and 329 civilians have been killed or injured. Since the beginning of 2026, Ukraine has exported over 27 million tons of food cargo by sea. The Ministry warns of possible complications for vessels entering and exiting ports.
