Trump Pressures Supermarkets to Lower Prices, Demands Reduction in Beef Prices
The Trump administration has recently pressured major supermarket chains such as Walmart, Kroger, and Albertsons to lower beef prices during the peak shopping season around Independence Day in the United States, aiming to alleviate food inflation pressures. Walmart announced price cuts on thousands of items, with ground beef prices reduced by up to 12%. Trump stated that Walmart lowered prices "at the request of the government" and urged other retailers to follow suit. This is part of the Trump administration's measures to control inflation. Trump also called for lower gasoline prices, restrictions on credit card interest rates, and reduced drug prices to address voter dissatisfaction with high prices. The U.S. cattle herd is at its lowest level in 75 years, and tight supply continues to drive up beef prices, with ground beef prices rising 12% year-on-year in May, indicating that food inflation pressures have not yet fully eased.
