Ethereum's 2027 Hegota Upgrade to Allow Fee Payments Without Holding ETH

By: www.tokenpost.kr|2026/09/09 00:42:16

The Ethereum 2027 Hegota upgrade is set to include a feature that allows transactions to be conducted without directly holding ETH. The core proposal, EIP-8141, known as 'Frame Transactions', divides transaction validation, execution, and fee payment into multiple stages, enabling separate accounts or applications to pay the fees. Ethereum core developers have classified EIP-8141 as 'planned for inclusion' in the Hegota upgrade scheduled for August 27, 2026. Currently, transaction fees on Ethereum must be paid in ETH, requiring users who only hold stablecoins to acquire a small amount of ETH separately. With the implementation of EIP-8141, users will be able to conduct transactions while holding stablecoins, with a fee payment account or application covering the ETH fees. Frame Transactions are designed to bundle multiple tasks into a single transaction, potentially changing the transaction processing methods in DeFi. While the role of ETH will still exist, the necessity to hold it directly may decrease. As of September 2026, the market size for Ethereum's stablecoins is reported to be $159 billion on Layer 1 and $12.4 billion on Layer 2. EIP-8141 is still in draft status, and the final inclusion and mainnet application schedule may change during the development process.
